Coming up: 8th annual Conference on Health and Humanitarian Logistics (August 29-31, Atlanta, GA)

Registration for the 8th annual Conference on Health and Humanitarian Logistics is now live online here. If you have questions about registration, rates, or other information, you may also e-mail us at humlogconf [at] gatech [dot] edu.

The conference is hosted by the Georgia Tech Center for Health & Humanitarian Systems (CHHS) and co-organized by the INSEAD Humanitarian Research Group, the MIT Humanitarian Response Lab, and Northeastern University. The agenda features plenary panels and interactive workshops on a variety of topics related to supply chain management and logistics in global health and humanitarian response and development, as well as poster sessions on innovative research and ample opportunities for networking. Information on speakers, panel topics, health and humanitarian site visits will be available soon.

The conference will feature keynote addressesk from Principal Deputy Director of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Dr. Anne Schuchat, and from President and CEO of CARE USA, Michelle Nunn, on humanitarian emergencies, as well as plenary panels on the below topics:

  • Strengthening Public Health Systems
  • Supply Chain Complexities in Refugee Crisis Response
  • Designing Supply Chains for Health Emergencies
  • Sudden Onset Disasters: Matching Supply with Demand

If you would like to lead a break-out workshop at the conference, please submit an abstract online (up to 1-page, including the names and bios of all presenters) on the Conference website here before June 24, 2016. Private sector companies must include a co-presenter from a non-governmental organization (NGO), governmental partner, or other organization as a demonstration of collaboration.

There are no conference scholarships or financial aid. However, limited funds are available to support students presenting accepted posters at the conference. Support includes free conference registration and up to $250 in travel expenses for students traveling in the US and up to $500 for students traveling outside of the US. To be considered for financial support, attach a single PDF file containing the items listed on the website as part of your poster submission. Poster presenter pays registration fee up front and will be reimbursed after the conference.

Students, Find Your Tools to Address Global and Environmental Health Issues!

Environmental health issues are present in our everyday lives, and I am committed to improving the environment in which we live, globally. Most recently, I realized that in order to make a difference on environmental issues, all I need are simple tools. This realization inspired me to become involved with APHA’s International Health Student Committee (IHSC). In this committee, I can promote and increase awareness about important international health issues including, environmental health, among students interested in the field. To accomplish these goals, I use tools such as advertising and blog-writing. I help design flyers to advertise IHSC’s initiatives, some of which include educating students on how to address environmental health issues through our CareerTalk series. Upcoming Panel Discussion: Hunger in the Age of Climate Change (Washington, DC)

 Today the White House will announce the release of the Third National Climate Assessment.  This report is already garnering national and international press; climate change is one of the president’s primary areas of focus.  What does the report say about climate change in the United States, and what do these findings mean for hungry and poor people in the United States and globally? Join with members of the faith, environmental, and anti-hunger communities to discuss how we can work together to provide adequate nutrition even as the climate is changing in ways that require new methods of growing, storing, and transporting food.

FYI: Upcoming USAID Webinar on New Climate Change Document

The USAID Office of Global Climate Change is introducing a new climate resilient development framework to the Adaptation Community.

On April 8, 2014, at 4 p.m. EST, Kit Batten, USAID/GCC Coordinator, and the adaptation team at USAID will lead a special presentation covering in detail a new publication on climate adaptation for developing countries: Climate-Resilient Development: A Framework for Understanding and Addressing Climate Change. Working with decision makers in governments and across sectors, the framework has been applied in Barbados, Jamaica, Nepal, Peru, Philippines, St. Lucia, Tanzania, West Africa, and other countries that are preparing communities for a climate resilient future. The framework describes USAID’s “development-first” approach, which aims to achieve development goals despite climate change. This framework is an update of the approach presented in 2007 in USAID’s Adapting to Climate Variability and Change: A Guidance Manual for Development Planning.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. EST.
