Summer Internship: Basic Services at Inter-American Development Bank (Devex)

The Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank (“the MIF”) seeks a summer intern to work in the Access to Basic Services unit.

Description of Functions/Activities

Design and prepare projects, under the Access to Basic Services Area and the “Provision of Basic Services to Poor Populations” agenda comprising basic services for the poor and that engage the private sector including  developing models and financing:

  • Develop, elaborate, edit or process project documents through the project cycle
  • Monitor and follow-up on project implementation and results

Prepare, research and collect data related to provision of basic services to low income populations and support solicitation of additional funding from Bilateral Trust Funds

In collaboration and coordination with the Knowledge Management Unit, organize Seminars/Workshops in Washington and the LAC Region related to the Access  to Basic Services Area, which includes:

  • Help identifying, selecting and contacting expert speakers for the events
  • Help in promoting events and preparing event material
  • Develop and maintain event agendas and other documents related to an event
  • Coordinate communications with speakers, moderators and other institutions
  • Develop content for the MIF website and intranet
  • Update guidelines for speakers and moderators and other event documents
  • Update the database and mailing lists as needed, compiling information of existing contacts and adding new one
  • Aid in coordination of logistics as needed

Knowledge Dissemination Program related to Access to Basic Services:

  • Help in the update of the website
  • Help in the preparation of brochures, presentations and other materials related to Access to Basic Services programs and services
  • Conceive, prepare and support the dissemination of knowledge projects to contribute to Learning, Communicating, and Catalyzing (LCC) and systemic impact

Compensation commensurate with experience.

Internship Opportunity: Namaste Kathmandu

Namaste Kathmandu is 501(c)3 organization based out of Portland, OR that directly funds the development of Paurakhi Guan, a newborn village birthed from a makeshift settlement of refugees along the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Nepal. At its root, our mission is to bring into practice the notion of access to education as basic human right. A child gone uneducated in the heart of Kathmandu is a life lost in the dark cycle of poverty and ignorance. Our mission is to do what it takes to bring education to children in underserved areas of the world, be it Kathmandu, Nepal, or suburbs of Seattle, United States.

We are looking for people who are skilled in literature review, research, report writing, and grant writing skills. We intend to apply for some major grants in the next few months. Students: Internship in Maternal Mortality for Summer/Fall 2011

The Safe Motherhood Program at UCSF is accepting applications for an upcoming internship opportunity in the Copper-belt of Zambia. The intern will spend the majority of their time in the labor and gynecology wards at a district hospital and several peri-urban clinics, gaining an understanding of front-line maternal health service delivery and research.
Position Description:

This internship is based in the Copperbelt Region of Zambia.  The intern will work on a study that aims to reduce maternal mortality and morbidities in Zambia and Zimbabwe caused by obstetric hemorrhage.  This is a cluster randomized control study that compares outcomes based on evidence from intervention and control clinics.  The intervention clinics in this study are the clinics that are using the NASG (Non-pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment) as a first aid device for patients suffering from hypovolemic shock caused by bleeding during pregnancy.

Some of the duties of the intern include:

-Providing logistic support for the local Zambian team – distributing supplies, copies, etc.
-Reviewing data collection forms
-Encouraging protocol adherence
-Conducting trainings with local hospital and clinic staff
-Visiting the study clinics
-Following up on cases
-Liaising with the San Francisco office and the in-country staff

Desired qualifications: Experience in international settings, interest in maternal health, research experience, familiarity with clinical environments.  Must be highly detail-oriented, be well organized and have excellent follow-through skills.

Time requirements: Must be able to commit a minimum of 2 months in the Copperbelt, although 3 months is preferred.

Compensation/Funding: Interns must secure their own funding for travel and lodging. There is no funding for these positions but it is valuable experience for someone who wants to make a huge difference in women’s lives.
